How to Recover deleted Files from Flash Card used in Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are used to capture still photographs or videos, or both. It is the main device used in the field of Digital Photography, which captures images via an electronic image censor. Its popularity has increased since few years, as it can do things that film cameras cannot, like displaying images immediately on the screen after they are recorded, deleting images to free storage device, performing elementary image editing, etc. Some of the most popular brands of digital cameras are Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc,. Generally, digital cameras uses flash cards to store large amount of photos, as digital cameras have a small amount of internal memory. Flash card is an electronic data storage device used for storing digital information. Secure Digital (SD) card, Extreme Digital (XD) card, Multi Media Card (MMC), Compact Flash (CF) are some of the flash cards used in the digital cameras, Mp3 devices, gaming consoles, mobile phones, personal computers, etc to store the digital data.

Flash cards, when compared to hard drives, are portable enough to carry along with. These cards can be connected easily to personal computers using a device called "Card reader".  Some of the scenarios which causes loss of photos or videos from flash cards:

  • Accidental deletion: Deletion of photos using "Delete All" option in digital cameras. When cameras are connected to the computer, if the photos from flash card are deleted, they will not go to the Recycle Bin, instead will bypass it.
  • Formatting flash card: When user tries to access photos or videos from the flash card, sometimes an error will occur “Unformatted drive, would you like to format now?” In such a scenario, user has to format the card and thus data will be lost from it. In some cases, user accidentally formats the flash card when connected to the computer. However, it is possible to recover formatted flash card files using good recovery software.
  • Virus attack: As flash cards are used in nearly all the multimedia devices, and also in the computer, they are very much prone to virus attacks, which may lead to important data loss which is stored on flash cards.
  • Corruption of flash card: Flash card may get corrupted if it is pulled abruptly from the card reader during the data transfer process. When flash card is corrupted, BIOS detect it, but data present on it becomes inaccessible. It is recommended to use a recovery software to recover files from damaged flash card.

In any of the above mentioned scenarios, it is recommended that you should not use the flash card immediately before using any recovery tool to recover deleted files from flash memory card.
